A note on gathering
Culture becomes most generous when a room gives people more than one way to enter.
Afterglow is the part of an evening that cannot be scheduled exactly: the extra conversation at the door, the song someone hums on the way home, the photograph a friend sends the next morning. But hosts can make room for it by avoiding an abrupt ending and giving the close its own atmosphere.
A dimmer room, a final cup of chai, a clear route to coats and transport, and a last note of music can transform departure from an interruption into a soft landing. The best close does not insist on a grand finale. It lets guests leave carrying something useful.
